Squint and Paediatric Ophthalmology
What is paediatric ophthalmology?
It is a branch of ophthalmology that deals with ophthalmological conditions occurring in children. Some ophthalmological diseases of children do not cause pain are strabismus, congenital cataracts and amblyopia. Others do and they are corneal abrasion, retinoblastoma, conjunctivitis and retinal detachment.
Some of the eye diseases that occur in children are described below:
Strabismus: It is a disease in which when an item is being looked at, the eyes are not able to align to each other. Its symptoms are crossed eyes, diplopia or double vision, loss of vision, loss of perception of depth, wandering eyes and inability of eyes to point in the same direction.
Congenital cataracts: It is a hereditary disorder in which the eye’s lens is clouded in children. Its symptoms include faded colours, double vision, blurry and clouded vision, reduction in quality of vision, and lights looking very bright.
Amblyopia: One eye isn’t able to see and focus as well as the other eyes, leading to reduced vision. Its symptoms include inwards or outwards eye, blurred and double vision, squinting, tilting of head, abnormality of vision tests, bad perception of depth and inability of eyes to work with each other.
Retinoblastoma: It is an eye cancer that starts in retina. Its symptoms are swollen eyes, red eyes, blurred vision, lazy eye, eyes look like they’re focusing in different directions, and pupil appearing white when light is thrown onto it.
Conjunctivitis: Due to a viral or bacterial infection or an exposure to allergens, inflammation of the transparent cover of eye occurs. Its symptoms are swollen eyes, red eyes and a feeling of itching.
